Born on July 18, 1940 in Detroit, she was the daughter of Arne Joel and Hazel Lillian (Finnila) Santti. Karen grew up in the large and loving Finnish-American community, summering on Sun Lake at the Finn Camp in Wixom where she served on the Recreation Committee. She graduated from Southfield High School in 1958. After meeting at a birthday party in Royal Oak, she soon fell in love with and married Richard “Dick” Pype on July 18, 1961 in Allenton, Michigan– her devoted husband of 53 years. Together they raised four children, for whom Karen was homemaker, chauffeur, Girl Scout Leader, short-order cook, Band Parent and Mom; she was active in American Field Service and serving as a Host Mom for the International Student Exchange Program. Karen was counselor and confidant and general comptroller. She was an expert, some would say, a “compulsive” organizer, but it served her family well.

Karen Pype loved deeply and lived life to its fullest with grace and good purpose. She was an avid reader and loved long days at the beach with a good book. She enjoyed the theater and held season tickets to the Fisher and followed the Broadway shows and organized outings to the young people’s productions for her children and then grandchildren. She enjoyed travel – to London and Germany, Italy, Morocco and Mexico – and anywhere to visit family and friends. To keep track of them all, she studied genealogy and joined Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family across generations. A woman of abiding faith, she was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Milford.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Pype; children, Robyn (Wayne) Jokinen, Todd Pype, Julie (Jeff) Hoisington and Jeffrey (Justina) Pype; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe (Carol) Santti, Karl (Carol) Santti; sisters, Tina Santti and Sue Andrews; sisters-in-law, Pat (Bill) Cutcher, Charlene Pype and Nanette Pype.
