Finn Camp Still Being Invaded!

In June we reported how three invasive species—purple loosestrife, garlic mustard and Japanese bittersweet—were threatening the trees and grounds around the Finn Camp. The worst offender is probably the bittersweet, which you can see strangling a tree below.

Some of these vines can be removed with loppers, but the larger ones require something like a bow saw.

On Sunday, November 13, at 10:00 a.m., we could use volunteers to come out (meet at the pole barn like the Forest Management Committee) to attack the bittersweet invaders in particular. If we could cut out the offending bittersweet during the woods committee’s own session and coordinate with them the pickup of cuttings for delivery to the kokko pile that would work well.

Andrew Byron Pelto

November 23, 1931 – August 26, 2011

We are sad to report that fellow Finn Camp member Andrew Pelto passed away on Friday. Our condolences to Andrew’s family.

Pelto, Andrew Byron, a resident of Milford for 35 years, was received in the loving arms of Jesus, Friday, August 26, 2011.   Andrew passed at home in the care of his family.  He was 79 years old. Born on November 23, 1931 in Bessemer, MI he was the son of Tynne Marianne Kangus and Andrew Herman Pelto.

He served our country as a member of the Marine Corps during the Korean War and the historic Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Northeastern Korea.  This Marine is one of the “Chosin Few.”  He was a member of the Milford American Legion Post #216.

He graduated from Wayne State University in 1957 with a Bachelors Degree in Science, Mechanical Engineering.  He worked at Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Hydromation Company and was a founding member of Filtra-Systems Company.

He retired in 1994 and enjoyed his family and his faith in God.  He was an active attendee of South Hill Church in Milford and taught youth classes, vacation bible study and sang in the choir and Church productions and Christmas Eve services.  Andrew enjoyed many family gatherings and the solitude at the family cottage on Big Wolf Lake in Lewiston, MI.  Winter vacations in Madeira Beach, FL were enjoyed for many years with family and friends.

Andrew is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Marion June (nee. Petrick) and their children, Kevin (Bridget), Janene (Glynn) Simmons, Greg (Nancy), Brian (Jill), Julie (Chris) Dahlin, David, thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one deceased.  Also survived by his brother, Paul and sister, Annabelle and a large extended family on his Finnish side and his wife’s Italian side. Andrew demonstrated valiant Finnish “SISU” in his lifetime.

A Funeral Service will be held at Oak Pointe / South Hill Church of Milford, 1250 South Hill Rd., Milford on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 11 AM.  Burial and military honors will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.  Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford on Monday 2-9 PM.
